Improving Focus in Point Tracking Mode
If you experience focusing problems while tracking a point, here’s how you can troubleshoot and solve the issue step-by-step.
Step 1: Check Point Tracking Accuracy
- Move the body device (jib, slider, or dolly) manually while in Preview Mode.
- Observe if the tracked point stays centered on the screen.
- Move slowly because preview mode may have a slight delay.
- Stop and wait briefly for the head to stabilize before checking the point’s position.
Important:
If the point drifts from side to side, you must first fix the point tracking accuracy.
(See our separate video on fixing point tracking.)
Step 2: Adjust Focus Shift
If point tracking is accurate but focus is still off:
- Use the Focus Shift feature while tracking.
- Move the focus shift up or down until the point appears sharp.
- Test by moving the camera back and forth and checking if the point remains in focus during the motion.
Step 3: Reload the Lens
If focus shifting doesn’t fully solve the problem:
- Press Change Lens at the top of the screen.
- Select your lens again from the list.
- This reloads the lens profile, which often fixes focusing issues.
Step 4: Remap the Lens
If reloading the lens doesn’t help:
- Go to Change Lens.
- Tap on Add New Lens to start the remapping process.
- Follow the lens mapping tutorial (see our separate video).
- Load the newly mapped lens profile.
Step 5: Stop Down the Aperture
As a final step:
- Slightly close down your aperture (increase the f-stop number).
- This will increase the depth of field, making focusing more forgiving across the motion.
